Many merchant travellers including Marco Polo suggested that Sri Lanka has the best sapphires, topazes, amethysts and other gems in the world. Persian traders have crossed the Indian Ocean since the 4th and 5th century to trade gems from Sri Lanka to the east. Sri Lanka still has the highest density of gem deposits compared to its landmass than any other country.
